texas wind turbine expansion

GE Vernova’s massive deal with RWE will plant 109 wind turbines across Texas, generating 308 MW of clean energy. The Honey Mesquite and Forest Creek projects create hundreds of construction jobs while powering 85,000 homes. Construction kicks off fall 2025, with turbines built at GE’s Florida facility. Texas, already a wind powerhouse, gets even bigger. RWE’s $9 billion investment since 2007 proves this ain’t just hot air.

Two energy heavyweights just shook hands on a massive wind deal in the Lone Star State. GE Vernova will supply 109 of its 2.8 MW-127m onshore wind turbines to RWE, powering up a combined 308 MW of wind capacity in Texas. Not exactly small potatoes.

The deal covers two projects: the brand-new Honey Mesquite wind farm in Glasscock County and an upgrade to the existing Forest Creek wind farm near Big Spring. You know what they say about Texas – go big or go home. RWE clearly got the memo, having poured $9 billion into the state since 2007.

These turbines aren’t your grandpa’s windmills. Each sports a 127-meter rotor diameter, part of GE Vernova’s next-gen high-power portfolio. The nacelles – fancy word for the box on top – will roll out of GE’s Pensacola facility in Florida. American-made, for those keeping score.

Deliveries won’t start until later in 2025, with Honey Mesquite construction breaking ground in fall 2025. The Forest Creek deal was booked in Q2 2024, while Honey Mesquite followed in Q3. The official public announcement date is set for March 18, 2025. Paperwork, am I right?

The economic impact looks promising. Hundreds of full-time construction jobs, plus long-term manufacturing positions at the Pensacola facility. Once spinning, these turbines will generate enough juice for over 85,000 homes and businesses. Rural communities getting that sweet, sweet renewable energy.

These turbines aren’t just spinning blades—they’re job creators powering rural America one renewable megawatt at a time.

It’s a win for the environment too. Less carbon, more sustainability, and Texas gets to flex its status as America’s wind power capital. Again. The wind farms will help avoid approximately CO2 emissions that would otherwise contribute to climate change.

Both companies bring serious renewable credentials to the table. GE Vernova has about 56,000 turbines installed globally, totaling around 120 GW of capacity. RWE ranks as the third-largest renewables company in the U.S. This agreement further expands the partnership with GE Vernova to secure American-made components for both energy projects.

The deal highlights a growing trend of repowering existing wind farms – out with the old, in with the new. Forest Creek will receive 45 shiny new turbines as part of its makeover. Because sometimes even wind farms need a facelift.
