blm geothermal leases revenue

The Bureau of Land Management’s geothermal leasing program in Utah has generated $5.6 million through competitive and non-competitive auctions since 2022. Companies like Ormat Technologies, Velikan Renewables, and RodaTherm Energy are investing in the state’s renewable energy potential. These leases support federal, state, and local programs while promoting clean energy development. BLM carefully balances energy production with environmental protection, excluding sensitive areas from development. The program continues to attract major investors for future auctions.

As the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) continues its push toward renewable energy goals, Utah’s geothermal leasing program has gained significant momentum in recent years. The agency has been actively leasing parcels for geothermal energy development across the state, generating substantial revenue while promoting clean energy production.

Since 2022, the BLM has conducted several competitive and non-competitive auctions in Utah, resulting in millions of dollars in revenue. A notable auction in 2022 raised $794,028 from the lease of 21,685 acres. These funds support various federal, state, and local programs while advancing renewable energy development efforts. The auction was conducted through a purely online platform, making it accessible to a wider range of potential investors.

Utah’s geothermal auctions have generated millions since 2022, with proceeds supporting critical programs while advancing clean energy initiatives.

Major energy companies have shown strong interest in Utah’s geothermal potential. Ormat Technologies recently secured 1,678 acres for future development, aiming to expand its environmentally friendly energy operations in the state. Ormat plans to develop two new plants, with the first one expected to begin operations in 2027. Other players like Velikan Renewables LLC and RodaTherm Energy Corporation have also leased significant land parcels for geothermal projects.

The upcoming April 2025 lease auction is expected to generate more revenue, with 15 parcels totaling 50,813 acres in southwestern Utah up for bid. This auction highlights the continued interest in developing Utah’s rich geothermal resources.

Geothermal energy offers numerous benefits as a stable, renewable power source with minimal carbon emissions compared to fossil fuels. The technology boasts availability factors of 95%, delivering consistent power regardless of weather conditions or time of day. It’s helping Utah meet federal targets of developing 25 gigawatts of renewable energy on public lands by 2025, supporting the goal of a carbon-neutral power sector by 2035.

The BLM carefully balances energy development with environmental protection. Leases exclude sensitive areas like Wilderness Areas and Areas of Critical Environmental Concern. Each lease undergoes thorough review with input from local governments, communities, and stakeholders.

Beyond revenue generation, geothermal development creates jobs in exploration, construction, and operations. It enhances energy security through diversification while using domestically available resources.

As Utah continues to develop its geothermal potential, it’s positioning itself as a key player in America’s renewable energy future.
