china s energy storage revolution

A revolution in power storage is sweeping across China. The numbers are staggering – 180 million kilowatts of new-type energy storage planned by 2027. That’s not a typo. The government isn’t messing around with its National Action Plan, which will drive a cool 250 billion yuan (or 35.2 billion U.S. dollars) in direct project investment. Talk about putting your money where your mouth is.

China’s already hit 73.76 million kilowatts by the end of 2024, and they’re just getting started. The country will blow past 100 GW by the end of 2025 – that’s over 30 times what they had during their 13th Five-Year Plan. And they’re not stopping there. 200 GW by 2027-2028, 300 GW around 2030. Ambitious? Yes. Impossible? Doesn’t seem like it.

China’s energy storage explosion isn’t slowing down—from 74 million kilowatts to 300 GW by 2030. Ambition in overdrive.

Take Cubenergy’s 15 GWh base in Changzhou. Nearly 55,000 square meters of battery-making muscle, topped out last December and running full-tilt by Q2 2026. The price tag? A mere 5.5 billion RMB. The facility introduces 10 industry-leading production lines covering everything from cells to system integration. Oh, and they’re casually throwing in 360 million RMB for a solid-state battery line. Because why not?

Then there’s the Tongliao project. 500 MW / 2,000 MWh of pure lithium-ion power that went from dirt to delivering electricity in five months. Five months! The project handles 600 GWh annually in peak-valley shifting with max throughput of 1.5 TWh. Not exactly small potatoes. These advancements mirror the U.S. trajectory where battery storage capacity is set to reach a record 18.2 GW in 2025, essential for balancing renewable integration.

Behind it all are dual carbon goals and renewable integration. China’s new NDC targets call for wind-solar capacity exceeding 3.6 TW by 2035 – six times 2020 levels. They’re serious about green hydrogen too. The Songyuan Industrial Park’s first phase is already churning out 45,000 metric tons annually. The plan includes 21 specific measures designed to boost energy storage applications across power generation and grid infrastructure while accelerating technological innovation.

The strategic impacts are clear. Manufacturing is scaling up, transmission systems are expanding, and renewable deployment is exploding – 198 GW of new solar in just five months of 2025. More than the entire U.S. added in 2024. Game on.
