Pacifico’s 30MW Mekong Wind Farm Powers 27,000 Vietnamese Homes Against All Odds

Turbines are spinning off the coast of Vietnam’s Bến Tre Province, pumping clean energy into thousands of local homes. The Mekong Wind Farm, a 30 MW offshore powerhouse in the East Vietnam Sea, is finally delivering results after years of planning. About 27,000 households now receive electricity from these massive blades cutting through salty air. Not too shabby for a project that once existed only on paper.

The wind farm generates between 90-105 gigawatt-hours annually, churning out roughly 245 MWh daily. That’s enough to cover about a month’s worth of electricity for an entire Mekong Delta province. Talk about punching above your weight class.

Behind this renewable success stands Mekong Wind Power, with Gulf International Holding controlling 95% of the project while Thanh Thanh Cong Group holds the remaining 5%. Vietnam Electricity (EVN) is locked in for the long haul, agreeing to purchase all that sweet, sweet clean energy for the next two decades at about $0.098 per kilowatt-hour. The bean counters must be thrilled.

Construction kicked off in 2020 with Power China Huadong Engineering and Powerchina International Group handling the heavy lifting. The project uses Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy turbines for Phase I, with Goldwind turbines waiting in the wings for Phase II. These aren’t your grandfather’s windmills – they’re mounted on fixed monopile foundations and connected by underwater cables. With a typical lifespan of 25 years, these turbines represent a significant long-term investment in Vietnam’s energy future.

This 30 MW installation is just the appetizer. The full project aims to reach a whopping 310 MW when all phases are complete. Similar to the Sunpro Wind Farm in Thới Thuận Commune, this project represents a significant investment in Vietnam’s renewable energy sector. Comparable projects in the region suggest financing likely ran around $28.5 million in senior debt, similar to what Pacifico Energy secured for their Sunpro Wind Farm. The project strategically supports Vietnam’s Revised Power Development Plan for sustainable energy growth through 2030.

After four years of construction challenges, regulatory hurdles, and probably more than a few headaches, commercial operations finally began in 2024.
