America faces a clean energy crisis. China dominates renewable production, controlling 80% of solar panels and 66% of wind turbines globally. The U.S.? Zero percent in half these technologies. Biden’s $7 billion solar investment is just a start. We need a new Green Transformation that avoids past environmental mistakes while creating high-paying jobs. America pioneered agricultural transformation once. The energy battlefield awaits similar innovation.
While many Americans associate the term “Green Transformation” with modern environmental movements, its true legacy began decades earlier as a radical change of global agriculture that reshaped how humanity feeds itself.
Norman Borlaug kickstarted this transformation in Mexico with high-yielding wheat varieties, but the concept didn’t stay confined to the developing world. America had its own agricultural transformation, well before the term became trendy. Borlaug’s work led to significant yield increases that dramatically reduced malnutrition in Mexico before spreading to other countries.
The U.S. version began with some pretty basic stuff – guano, potash, and nitrate. Yeah, bird poop was transformative once. This led to massive farming operations spreading across the prairies.
Then came the game-changer: alfalfa, or “Chili Clover” as they called it. The U.S. Patent Office didn’t mess around, distributing thousands of seed packets nationwide. Smart move.
Fast forward to today. China’s got us in a chokehold on clean energy tech. Not just a small lead – complete domination. They control over 80% of global production capacity for 11 clean technologies.
The U.S.? A big fat zero percent for more than half of these components. Pretty embarrassing for a supposed superpower.
Look at the numbers. China makes 80% of the world’s solar panels and 66% of wind turbines. They’re not playing games. They’re playing chess while we’re still learning checkers.
Africa might offer some hope with its lithium deposits. But guess who’s already there, checkbook open? China, of course.

What we need isn’t just a rehash of the original Green Transformation. That brought spectacular yield increases – 208% for wheat, 109% for rice – but came with serious environmental baggage.
Overused chemicals, degraded soil, polluted water. Not a great legacy.
If America wants to break China’s stranglehold on the clean energy future, we need a Green Transformation 2.0 that doesn’t repeat past mistakes. The renewable energy sector offers promising job growth opportunities, currently employing 13.7 million people globally while paying 25% above median wages.
One that integrates environmental sustainability with social impact. Otherwise, we’re just trading one dependent relationship for another.
