sage geosystems secures funding

Innovation meets deep pockets in Houston’s energy corridor. Sage Geosystems just scored a whopping $97 million in funding, proving some investors still believe in Texas energy—just not the kind that comes from dead dinosaurs.

Founded in 2020 near Bush Intercontinental Airport, this geothermal startup is basically turning rocks into batteries. Seriously.

Turning hot rocks into batteries? Yep, that’s Houston innovation for you—no dinosaur juice required.

CEO Cindy Taff heads a team with 200 years of combined oil and gas experience. Old dogs, new tricks? You bet. These former fossil fuel experts now drill for heat instead of crude. Ironic? Maybe. Smart? Definitely.

Sage’s technology is pretty slick—they’ve designed a two-well system that works like an underground lung, targeting hot dry rock 2.5-6 kilometers deep. Traditional geothermal methods? Boring and limited. Sage’s approach reveals 130 times more potential across the U.S. Talk about an upgrade.

The money isn’t coming from your average Silicon Valley tech bros either. Their backers include climate-focused venture funds, oil and gas firms like Nabors and Chesapeake (now Expand Energy), and even Texas family foundations.

Everybody wants a piece of the hot rock action.

They’re not just playing around in labs. Sage is building a 3MW energy storage facility with San Miguel Electric Cooperative and conducting feasibility studies for Army and Navy bases. Their innovative approach can complement solar/wind for continuous power generation around the clock.

The Department of Defense doesn’t waste time on energy fantasies. This stuff works.

Meta and other data center operators are knocking on Sage’s door too. Those server farms gulp electricity like college students chug beer on spring break.

December will see their first geopressured geothermal system go live. After that? Global domination, probably.

They’re leveraging existing oil and gas infrastructure and supply chains to scale fast. With minimal land use compared to other renewable options, geothermal solutions like Sage’s offer an efficient path to clean energy.

Houston’s always been an energy capital. Now it might become the clean energy capital too. Who would’ve thought?

The same folks who drilled us into the climate crisis might help drill us out of it.

Their collaboration with Ormat Technologies aims to accelerate deployment by drilling deeper beneath existing geothermal fields and integrating with Ormat’s infrastructure.
