bipartisan support for ev funding

A new poll shows Americans are putting aside political differences when it comes to electric vehicles. An overwhelming 85% of voters support federal funding for affordable American-made EVs, including 76% of Republicans. Both parties agree on the importance of job creation and building better charging stations. This rare moment of unity comes as the nation faces growing competition in the global EV market. What’s driving this unexpected alliance?

Despite the often deep political divisions in America, a new poll shows remarkable agreement between Republicans and Democrats on federal funding for electric vehicles. A striking 85% of voters believe federal support for affordable, American-made EVs is vital to the nation’s future.

The survey reveals strong bipartisan backing for EV investments, with 76% of Republicans favoring affordable EV initiatives that benefit working families. Republicans also show robust support for keeping EV manufacturing jobs in America, with 81% backing federal efforts to retain these positions in the United States.

Job creation emerged as a key factor driving this cross-party consensus. Three-quarters of Republican respondents believe federal EV investments create “good jobs” for American workers. Voters across the political spectrum oppose shifting these jobs overseas, particularly to competitors like China.

Job creation unites America’s divided parties, with Republicans embracing EV investments as vital for keeping quality jobs from moving overseas.

Infrastructure development also garnered significant support. About 76% of Republicans call for improved and reliable public EV charging stations. Approximately 72% of voters support maintaining the $7,500 tax credit for EV purchasers. Voters see accessible infrastructure as essential for making electric vehicles a practical choice for everyday Americans.

The poll highlights economic competitiveness as another area of agreement. Many Americans connect EV investments with maintaining U.S. leadership in automotive manufacturing and innovation. China’s growing dominance in the EV market has created concern among voters who see federal support as necessary to secure America’s position in the global auto industry.

Tax incentives making EVs more affordable received broad backing as well. These financial supports are viewed as important tools for increasing adoption, especially among working families who might otherwise find electric vehicles out of reach.

While environmental benefits weren’t the primary focus, many respondents linked EV adoption to reduced emissions and enhanced energy security through less dependence on foreign oil. This aligns with expert assessments that renewable energy can achieve over 90% of needed carbon reductions in the power sector.

Interestingly, Republicans express mixed enthusiasm about personally purchasing EVs despite their support for investments. This suggests voters are taking a pragmatic view focused on jobs and economic benefits rather than making decisions based solely on political ideology.

The comprehensive survey was conducted by Meeting Street Insights and Hart Research using a bipartisan national poll that reached over 1,000 registered voters between February 19-25, 2025.
