electric vehicles dominate uk

While the rest of Europe plays catch-up, the UK’s electric vehicle revolution continues to charge ahead with impressive momentum. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) claimed a whopping 26.4% of new car registrations in November 2025, up from 25.1% the previous year. It’s not just a blip either. Year-to-date BEV registrations jumped 26% compared to 2024, reaching a 22.7% market share. Impressive stuff.

The Brits aren’t stopping there. Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) are also having their moment, grabbing 11.9% of the market in November 2025—a 14.8% increase year-over-year. When you add up all the electrified options, including hybrids, they’re now about 27% of new registrations. That’s more than a quarter of all new cars. Traditional petrol and diesel? They’re so last decade. The UK government’s strategy includes upfront purchase incentives of up to £3,750 for qualifying zero-emission vehicles, which were reintroduced in August 2025.

The UK consistently outshines its European neighbors, with BEV market share running about 5 percentage points higher than the EU average. In Q3 2025, the UK’s 23% BEV share trumped France’s 20% and Germany’s 19%. Not too shabby for a nation often mocked for its rainy weather and questionable cuisine.

While other Europeans lag behind, Britain’s 23% BEV market share leaves France and Germany in its electric dust.

Year-end numbers tend to surge as manufacturers scramble to meet compliance targets. Projections suggest 2025 will finish with BEV market share nearing the UK’s 28% Zero Emission Vehicle target. The total registrations have reached an impressive 1,874,271 electric vehicles in 2025, showing the remarkable adoption rate across the country. They always seem to pull it off somehow.

One thing’s clear: Brits are embracing electric despite public charging costs being seven times higher than home charging. The steady drop in battery pack costs from $1,100/kWh to $137/kWh has made EVs increasingly affordable for the average consumer. Imagine how much faster adoption would be if public charging didn’t cost an arm and a leg!

The numbers tell the story: over 426,000 BEVs registered year-to-date in 2025, plus another 208,000 PHEVs. That’s a lot of silent vehicles zooming around Britain’s roundabouts.

The UK now accounts for 20.6% of all BEV volumes in Europe. The electric revolution isn’t coming—it’s already here. And the Brits are leading the charge.
