chinese dominance in solar

While the global solar tracker market heats up, Chinese manufacturer ArctechSolarRise has shocked industry watchers by surging to second place in 2024 shipment volumes. The company leapfrogged major US competitors like Array Technologies, GameChange Solar, and PV Hardware according to Wood Mackenzie’s latest report. Talk about an upset.

Arctech’s rise isn’t exactly coming from nowhere. The company ranked fifth globally in 2023 per Platts data and already dominated the APAC region with a whopping 32% market share. Now they’re flexing on the global stage, even positioning ahead of compatriot TrinaTracker in the 2024 rankings.

TrinaTracker isn’t exactly crying in the corner, though. They maintained their sixth-place position globally in 2023 and actually jumped to second place in Wood Mackenzie’s H1 2025 forecasts, trailing only NextPower. Not too shabby.

American firms are feeling the heat. Sure, Nextracker led 2023 shipments, followed by Array Technologies (15% share), GameChange Solar (12%), and PV Hardware (10%). But Chinese manufacturers are gaining ground fast. Cheaper components will do that.

China’s domestic solar tracker market itself is no joke—$247.6 million in 2023 revenue with projections hitting $824.2 million by 2030. That’s an 18.7% CAGR, folks. Dual-axis trackers dominate with nearly 57% of revenue. Notably, China represents only 4.3% of global solar tracker market revenue despite its massive domestic solar installations. China’s dominance extends beyond trackers, having installed as much solar capacity in 2023 as the entire world did in 2022.

The global picture? Massive. We’re looking at 752 GW of trackers installed between 2024-2030, with North America taking 39%, EMEA 31%, and Asia-Pacific 22%. Though APAC’s slice is growing—expected to hit 29 GW annually by 2030.

Interestingly, China’s domestic installations actually dropped 13% in 2024 to 3.604 GW, representing just 3% of global installations. But Policy Document No. 136 might juice those numbers for 2025.

Bottom line? Chinese companies like Arctech and Trina are leveraging cost advantages to challenge American dominance. The solar tracker industry saw an impressive 60GW installed globally in 2023, with that number expected to exceed 80GW in 2024. The solar tracker showdown is just heating up.
