north east ev charging hubs

While gas-guzzling drivers continue hunting for fuel stations, electric vehicle owners in North East England just got a serious upgrade to their charging options. Fastned has launched two new ultra-rapid charging hubs near Newcastle Airport and on North Moor Road in Sunderland. Hard to miss them—they’re the ones with those bright yellow “wings” lighting up the night like a sci-fi movie set.

The Newcastle Airport hub is pretty impressive, offering 12 charging bays pumping out up to 400 kW per driver. That’s not just fast, it’s “why-even-bother-sitting-down” fast.

Flying in or out of Newcastle? Grab a 400 kW supercharge so fast you’ll barely have time to blink.

Meanwhile, in Sunderland, the North Moor Road site opened on December 22, 2025, starting with six ultra-rapid bays. And just in case you’re keeping count, Fastned also added their ninth regional hub in Houghton-le-Spring, bringing their UK total to 35. They’re multiplying faster than coffee shops.

What does this mean for actual humans? Well, depending on your vehicle, you could get about 100 miles of range in roughly 5 minutes. Or 300 miles in about 20 minutes. Just enough time to grab that overpriced coffee at the Tesco next to the Houghton-le-Spring location.

All this juice comes from renewable energy, according to Fastned. The Houghton-le-Spring site is equipped with eight 300kW CCS charging bays capable of delivering impressive charging speeds. Similar to how battery storage capacity nearly doubled across the US in 2024, these charging solutions are essential for managing increasing electric demand. The site is conveniently located off Newbottle Street for easy access on the A182 northbound toward Newcastle. No small feat considering these monsters need serious grid connections. We’re talking multi-million-pound investments just to get the electricity flowing at these rates. Money well spent if you hate waiting.

The strategic placement connects major routes between Newcastle, Sunderland, and Durham. It’s a big deal for range anxiety sufferers who previously white-knuckled their way between charging spots. Now EV drivers can actually, you know, go places.

With multiple bays at each location, the days of hovering awkwardly waiting for someone to finish charging might finally be coming to an end. Revolutionary concept: infrastructure that actually works for the people using it. What a thought.
